SPEAKING OF LOVE
Rasika Dazzles Crowd at Pratima & Neal’s Wedding
ATL – The scene is set for a scintillating evening, black tie only, no-desi-garb, wedding reception.
the guests are in their finest and the MC for the evening begins by calling a young man all dressed in white to the stage. Eagerly taking the rambunctious cues off the guest tables, he jumps up in the air and clicks his feet together like an elated cartoon character from the Looney Tunes. The crowd cheers, as the hostess attempts the same move, in her heels, and tells the sharp-dressed gent she’ll give him her room number after. The crowd erupts a second time. She then reveals she was only attracted to him for his goatee – a stark reminder of her boyfriend. The crowd is left spent, only 2 minutes in.
This is the hilarious, witty, off-the-cuff repartee of Rasika Mathur, an improv comic hailing from Canada, Houston, & Chicago and 12-year veteran of alternative standup and sketch comedy in Los Angeles. Mathur uses a few choice facts about the bridal couple, throws in some knowledge of yoga and the chakras (now that she’s a certified yoga instructor as well), and her signature relevant, irreverent, spontaneous “combustions” before a live audience to bring a never-the-same-act-twice, guaranteed rukus to liven up the event and keep the night flowing.
“Thank you for representing women!” one guest exclaims over Prime DJ’s blaring, techno mixed- out “Take Over Control,” causing the impish improviser’s face to erupt in gratitude and awe. The young lady is probably referring to Mathur’s incredibly inspiring words of wisdom regarding love, poignantly directed at the singles tables, specifically to those who’ve “given up” on love, or on finding the right person. During her act, Rasika thumped at her chest. “This is your heart chakra.
Keep that shit open. So you don’t need open heart surgeryyyyy! Aw yeah!” Her delivery
always crackles with a little Wild N Out flavor. “That’s the Houston in me. My mind is playing tricks on me! Dunh Dunh Nun Nun Dunh Dunh Dunh Dunh!” she sings, strutting around the dancefloor ghetto-fabulously.
“What I love most about Rasika is her ability to connect with audiences of various age groups and ethnicity,” says Wedding Planner Snehal G. Vara. “With every event I’ve worked on with her, you see her go above and beyond to get to know the couple so that she can be unique in her approach. She takes you through a roller coaster of emotions with from down right hilarious to heart felt laughter that makes you laugh and cry at once!”
“When you think you’re going to be alone for the rest of your life…it’s a self-fulfilling prophecy.
You will be,” Rasika philosphizes. “When you think, “Oh, how come I only seem to end up with ugly guys,” you do only end up with ugly guys, but at least you have someone, so how bad can it be?” The crowd cheers as Rasika preaches truth. “I speak from my own experiences up there. And I stay with what’s happening in the moment. So if someone catches my eye, then yes, they will be flirted with during my act. Guy or girl, auntie or uncle, DJ or Caterer, Guest or Groom. It’s okay! I’m in love! That’s where I get my material!”

BEING IN LOVE
“I just recently visited Canada with my boyfriend and his kids. I feel that by surrounding ourselves with people who care about us and root for us, we are sharing ourselves, and our love, and that makes it become more real. When we keep to ourselves, then we’re all more likely to fall apart, because it’s just the two of us in a bubble, holding ourselves up. Whenever you can, share your love. It becomes 10,000x stronger. If you live in a place in the world where you have to hide your love, find ways to shower love on those you care about. Slowly, surely, cold hearts do melt open.”
